A gutter trough packed with fir needles and leaf sludge along a roof eave

A Portland gutter system moves more water in a week than some climates see in a season, and it does it while Douglas firs and bigleaf maples fill the troughs with needles and leaves. Gutters are roof hardware here, not an accessory: when they fail, water goes into the fascia, the siding, the foundation line, and back under the first course of shingles.

What goes wrong around here?

Needle dams in the troughs and at every downspout inlet, standing water that rusts seams and pulls hangers loose with its weight, overflow that streaks the siding and rots the fascia board behind the gutter, and downspouts that dump roof water right at the foundation. Under big canopy, a gutter can need clearing twice a season, not once a year.

Cleaning or replacing?

Sagging sections, rusted-through runs, and wrong-sized downspouts are replacement talk. Sound gutters full of needles are a cleaning job, possibly with guards worth discussing (they help with leaves, less with fir needles, which mat on top). A roofer looking at the roof edge anyway is the right person to say which you have.

What should the quote cover?

Linear feet and what is on them now, whether the fascia behind is sound or needs a section replaced first, downspout count and where they discharge, and who hauls the old material. On two-story and steep-lot homes, access is a real line item, not an afterthought.

Is this bundled with roof work?

Often. The gutter line comes off during most replacements and it is the natural time to swap an undersized or tired system. If you are already booking a reroof, ask about the gutters in the same conversation; it is usually cheaper than a second visit.
